Papers and photographs, 1943-1996.

Scattered documents and photographs related to the World War II service of Dr. Harned, a Madison, Wis. native, who served with the American Field Service as an ambulance driver in the 485th Ambulance Company with the British in Italy. Harned, who served as a surgeon during the Korean War and Operation Desert Storm, also served with the 13th Evacuation Hospital, Wisconsin Army National Guard. The collection includes an AFS identification card with photograph, a v-mail letter discussing religion and Christmas in England, and two letters home from New York discussing preparations for overseas. There is also a leave pass, souvenir ticket from Italy, Western Union telegram regarding discharge, and a newspaper article about Harned's service. A packet of material deals with Harned's successful request to wear his AFS medals on his Wisconsin National Guard uniform. Photographs show a restored American Field Service ambulance, landscape outside of Casino (Italy), and several pictures of AFS drives standing near ambulances. Of note is a photograph of Harned in uniform drinking a Coke near an ambulance and a photograph of Harned and Lowell Messerschmidt in uniform standing in front of an ambulance labeled "Wisconsin American Field Service."
